The point of human relationships

Of what value are human relationships?

I can think of a few things–

  • Companionship
  • A sense of belonging
  • Friendship
  • Fun
  • Laughter
  • Games
  • Emotional support
  • Material support (via money, housing, and/or food)
  • A certain something — je ne sais quoi

What else?

If one does not get one or more of the above things out of a relationship with a human, does the human then just become a stranger to the self?

And then what do you do? The past of least resistance is to continue the relationship, which could feel dissatisfying. On the other hand, disengaging from them could feel new, scary, and hard.

What if disengaging from human relationships were free of all the taboos? Would we then be less scared?
